Charlie
Towers
doesn’t just paint signs. He is a problem solver. Charlie
believes one of his greatest strengths is being able to
visualize a solution once a problem has been presented to him.
He started his business around 1979 while still working
full-time as a project engineer for Eastern Equipment and then
O.A. Newton. At that time he was traveling all over the
country to start up new plants and his wife was going to
Delaware Tech full time.
On his 30th birthday in 1985, Charlie took his business to a
full-time occupation. Shortly after that, he faced what he
thought was an insurmountable decision. He wanted to purchase
a modern, state-of-the art piece of equipment that would take
his company to a new level. After stewing over the decision
for several days, he asked his Dad for advice. Within five
minutes, his father clarified the problem and Charlie decided
ten thousand dollars was well worth it in order to take his
business to a new level. A wide variety of skills are needed
to solve problems associated with creating signs: painter,
cabinetmaker, welder, millwright, electrician, chemist, and
even wood carver. Charlie now has five full-time employees and
two part-times employees. He plans to move the business from
its location on Route 13 to a new facility in the
Ross
Business
Park
in the near future.
Charlie was born at home in Federalsburg and moved to
Seaford
in 1968, where he discovered sports. He lettered in football,
basketball and track. He held the high jump record for several
years. Charlie graduated from
Seaford
High School
and earned his Associates degree in Mechanical Engineering
from Delaware Tech.
At one point Charlie took a seven month leave of absence from
the sign business to help a friend start an automobile
dealership. He worked as service manager and ran the detailing
shop before deciding he needed to get back to his own
business.
Charlie’s passion for sports has carried on to this day. He
has coached basketball and football too children from first
grade through high school. He coached and scouted for
Seaford
High school
basketball for ten years. Through his coaching, he started a
sideline to his sign painting. He now has a growing business
decorating school gymnasium floors.
Charlie is the President of the Woodland Homeowner’s
Association and is involved in neighborhood activities.
Charlie was a member of the Seaford Jaycees and served as
president of the organization for ten years. While with the
Jaycees, he was involved with the operation of the Jaycee
swimming pool, and other misc. functions. Charlie was awarded
the Jaycee of the Year title and holds the highest honor
awarded a Jaycee – a lifetime Governorship [009].
Charlie moved on to the Nanticoke Rotary club where he is a
past-president and now Vice-president. He also has received
the John Burton Unsung hero award and the Rotarian of the Year
award for outstanding service to the organization. He also
chairs the annual Magic Show and the annual Christmas Shopping
tour for children. The new Rotary Dunking booth, unveiled at
the Nanticoke Riverfest, is one of Charlie’s visualizations.
He conceived of the idea to build a unit that had no parts
that would break while in use and would be housed on the
trailer that would transport it to various local events. In
addition he spends many hours helping out at the Rotary Houses
used as transitional housing units.
In addition, Charlie has been a board member of the Western
Sussex Boys & Girls Club and still is available to help
out when needed. He also has helped with the Department of
Parks and Recreations’ annual Easter Egg Hunt and with the
Downtown Seaford Association’s Christmas Parade.
Charlie is married to Debbie and they have a daughter Leigh
Anne who has two sons, Demetrius and Noah, and they have a
daughter Sherry who has a son, Colin.
The Seaford community benefits from all the behind-the-scenes
activities of
Charlie
Towers
. From sports to the homeowners association to the civic
organizations to his sign painting business, he is leaving a
positive mark on the community.

Businesses who are honored with the Spirit of the Community
award personify that intangible quality of what it takes to
make the area such a wonderful place to live, work and play.
The company owners/leaders and their employees go above and
beyond what is needed to simply run a successful business.
They contribute to the quality of life in the area they serve.
Eddie Kaye has been in business in this area since 1974 when
he started Edward J. Kaye Construction, Inc. He is known as an
“old-fashioned” business man and considers his handshake
his word. In one of his employee’s words, he is
“old-school” all the way.
By the very nature of his business, Mr. Kaye has been working
in the background of much of the growth in the area. He worked
on big construction projects, including the Nanticoke River
Marina project and many jobs for the City of
Seaford
. In addition, he has done work for the Mission of Hope,
formerly known as the Seaford Mission.
Kaye’s business ventures include Kay Construction, Inc.,
Sussex Sand & Gravel, Inc., Waster Recycling, Inc., and A
& A Farm, Inc. He has done well in the construction
business primarily because of the way he treats his customers.
Kaye is the son of the late Howard and Margaret Kaye,
graduated from
Seaford
High School
in 1973, and with his wife Sue, lives on
Kaye Road
in
Seaford
. His brother Vincent Kaye lives in Lewes, while his brother
Joseph Kaye lives in
Naples
,
Florida
.
People like Edward J. Kaye, who are humble and continue to
work long hours to run their businesses are the backbone of
the business community in this area. They are the humble
people who are truly the “spirit of the community”.
