Legislative Committee Program of Work 2009

The mission of the Chamber’s Legislative Committee is to review and report to members on legislation pending at the City, County, State and Federal levels that may have an impact on businesses or economic development in the greater Seaford area.
The committee’s members believe that in order to continue to be an effective Chamber and promote economic development that Chamber members must be informed of legislation that may affect their businesses so that their opinions may be heard by various governing entities.  It is not the intent of this committee to formulate opinion on legislation or to present an opinion as being the Chamber as a whole.
 - The committee’s objectives for 2009 are as follows:
1.                 Continue our attempt to establish a working group of members what have interest and/or expertise in legislative areas and meet on a monthly basis.
2.                 Maintain a working relationship with City, County and State legislators.
3.                 Begin reviewing legislative agendas and attending legislative meetings as warranted.
4.                 Continue our “Legislative and Economic Updates” via email and other communications to Chamber members.

Tourism Committee Plan of Work 2009

SEAFORD HERITAGE WEEKEND –Terry Ayers is chairing the event again in 2009. We are partnering with the Seaford Historical Society and the event will be held at the Governor Ross Plantation on Memorial Day Weekend. Committee chair Mark Reeve will assist the Chamber in fundraising efforts for the event. Our plans are to continue to grow this event to showcase the heritage of the Seaford area, from the earliest inhabitants to the present day.
 -  NANTICOKE RIVERFEST – This will be the 15th year for this event - and it is firmly established as a premier destination for summertime visitors.  The City of Seaford hosts the event. The Chamber will continue to assist the City in any way possible in the planning and carrying out of the event.
 -  SOUTHERN DELAWARE TOURISM - The Chairperson or a member of this Committee will attend Southern Delaware Tourism meetings as a voting member, along with the Chamber’s Executive Director. Assist in completing the year-end funding reports required by Southern Delaware Tourism in order to receive Chamber’s share of accommodation taxes.

 -  CORPORATE SPONSORSHIP – Continue to develop the multi-level marketing plan for seeking major corporate sponsorship for visitor-related events in our service area.
 -  AREA PROMOTION – Provide assistance to the municipalities and organizations in our service area to help promote festivals and events that draw visitors to the western Sussex County area.
 -  MARKETING THE LOCAL AREA – General public relations effort and article placement to promote the area’s economic viability and tourism. The committee chairperson will work closely with the executive director to develop additional regional media contacts to place articles on area attractions and strengths.
 -  COMMITTEE MEETINGS – Continue to develop an active committee and hold regular working sessions to develop both short term and long term goals for tourism in the greater Seaford Chamber of Commerce service area.

Business & Economic Development Committee Plan of Work 2009

 - T he committee will continue in 2009 along the same lines as in 2007 and 2008 because what we have been doing has been successful.   Our focus will continue to be on our monthly meetings and on our two annual events, the Job Fair and the Businesspersons of the Year Recognition Awards.
 -  Monthly meetings:  These will continue to be held on the second Thursday of each month at Noon at the Pizza King.  The Committee will continue to encourage the general membership to attend.  The agenda of these meetings will reflect the needs and the interests of our business community, and the expectation is that much can be accomplished if many are at the table.
 - Job Fair:  This will be held at the Seaford Senior High School in April, and, building on the excellent work that Paula has done over the past two years, , we are expecting it to be better than ever.  Indeed,  with the turmoil in the economy, it is quite possible that hosting this event and helping people find jobs may be the most important thing our committee does.
 - Businesspersons of the Year Recognition Awards:  A sub-committee, open to any member of the economic-development committee, will initiate the selection of the recipients.
 - New Initiatives:  At each monthly meeting we have a period for open discussion, and the hope is that we will find a “mission” above and beyond our current goals that will help make our service area a better place to live and work.
